As the Chelsea Flower Show 2023 comes to a close, I catch up with designer Alexa Ryan-Mills to hear her thoughts, feelings and reflections from her first Chelsea as a show garden designer
Living so far away from Chelsea on the other side of the world, I relied a lot on Britbox, the BBC and Garden World and the minute I saw 'Nurture' by Sarah Price, I was blown away. The restrained palette, the quiet, calm planting - it was so elegant. It also led me down a path of researching irises, researching Benton End and Cedric Morris and Sarah Cook's effort to find all 90 of the irises that Cedric Morris bred. It's been such an interesting journey.
Thank you for interviewing Alexa too - I love that she imagined a performing space for dancers /plants (ballet's a passion of mine) and I thought her garden looked wonderful.
