I’d like to read more about those plans for your Goth Garden! Maybe they’ll let you build it at the next Gardeners’ World Live?

Ha, maybe! Apparently in an early iteration of the Chelsea Fringe, a gardening group in one particular Japanese city built a series of little gardens on the backs of pick-up trucks, in which thrash metal bands then performed as they drove around town. Mobile thrash metal garden gigs. Now THAT is something to aspire to.

Wow! I would LOVE to see that!

I'm glad you had an Emily to take care of your garden while you were away. We went on holiday recently and were fortunate to have pet sitters who were willing to add a bit of plant care to their daily rota.

And congratulations on being featured in Substack's "What to Read" feature!

Thanks so much Laura! It was a proud moment, for sure.

Thank you for your newsletter, Dan. It's an inspiration, truly.

Hey, can you recommend a good newsletter for the Northern California (Bay Area, Oakland) gardener? I'm tending toward natives right now, but not exclusively... Also trying to get my feet wet in more vegetable gardening... herbs... oh so much fun!

Hi Christy, thanks so much for the thoughtful comment, and for your kind words! I wish I could recommend a newsletter that fitted the bill for your precise geographic and climatic location, but unfortunately the world of Gardening Substack is still in its nascent phase - there simply aren't that many of us out here... yet! You have what is known (for Euro-centric, post-colonial reasons) as a Mediterranean climate, and are blessed with tons of sunlight hours, especially compared with somewhere like London. I'm jealous! I think if you take inspiration from some of the gardens of southern Europe and even parts of Australia, you might find some dazzling non-native species to dabble with in your own space. And if you're into veg and herbs, keep your eyes peeled for an interview I'm publishing later this week with Mark Diacono - I think you'll enjoy it.
