I too have hay fever! The irony! The annoyance! Weirdly I find that chewing on the leaves of lemon balm seems to help. Ask me not how I discovered this ....

Oh, I hadn't come across that remedy! Fortunately (or not, depending on your perspective), lemon balm grows like a weed all over my garden. Mainly where it's not wanted. Though if it does take the edge off my hay fever, then I might have to start looking at it in a new light!

A guy I used to exercise with deliberately infected himself with hookworms to treat his hayfever. Hasn’t had hayfever since, but is also riddled with worms.. so take your pick I guess?

Wow, that seems… extreme. What a punt as well, to put so much faith in a parasitic worm. Just goes to show: hay fever sucks, and people are willing to do anything to alleviate the symptoms. Personally, I think I’ll steer clear of the worms… for now…

I've been snorting Nasacort for a month and a half already! If you're looking for a nontraditional approach: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/404/enemy-camp-2010/act-three-0

Ha, yes - this is exactly what commenter @Nick was talking about his workout buddy having done! I reckon you’re better off with the Nasacort…

At last another fellow sufferer! I really do sympathise… mine started when I was probably 7… although in those days nobody knew what it was…sent to play with my cousins on their farm in a barn full of straw!! you can imagine what I looked like when I got home!!

I start the end of February with the daffs and the hyacinths and just carry on through the year…I have drops….nasal spray and tablets…the only time I never had it was when I was having treatment for cancer!! make of that what you will!!

I am a passionate …obsessive gardener…. and always will be…. We even have 5 birch trees in the garden…. ridiculous I know…just asking for trouble..

I hate hay fever it is debilitating… I get earache..sore throat….itching 👀…lack of smell from the effects of the tablets and general lethargy….. will I stop gardening…..never!

Wow, it is so fascinating that you noticed a lull in hay fever symptoms during your cancer treatment. I wonder if, since hay fever is an immune response, maybe some aspect of your treatment made your immune system less active/responsive somehow to the hay fever triggers? And now that (I hope) you are in remission, your hay fever has returned? So interesting - thanks so much for sharing your experience.

And I’m gladdened to hear that you’re not letting your hay fever get in the way of your gardening. Good for you! (Though also sort of bad for you…!)

I was with a fellow gardener today who had thrown everything at it: all the pharmaceuticals one might imagine, but then also a Vaseline-like balm around her nostrils that is supposed to catch the pollen before it enters her nose, and something I hadn’t come across before, which is an acupressure armband thing that she wore around her elbow. She normally suffers really badly from hay fever but was ok today - hard to say for sure which of the various measures, or which combination of them, was doing the heavy lifting on the barrier front, but at least SOMETHING was working!
